Section 8: My Critic
One major concern for myself is that I have no work experience within the creative industry, therefore a main focus for me is gaining that experience. Amid the Coronavirus pandemic, the market is uncertain so I will use the time effectively to build my brand and portfolio. I will continue to grow and learn on the duration of the course.
After each module or project, I plan to reflect using a David Kolb’s (1984) learning cycle relating to Honey and Mumford’s learning styles. Honey and Mumford’s theory model was built on Kolb’s reflective cycle, the researchers felt Kolb’s model had “low validity with managers” (Rumson, 2017).
The Kolb learning process is a cycle, broken down into four stages (Jackson, 1995):
1. Concrete experience (Kolb’s ‘concrete experience’, and Honey and Mumford’s ‘activist’)
2. Observation and reflection (Kolb’s ‘reflective observation’ and Honey and Mumford’s ‘reflector’)
3. Formation of abstract concepts and generalisations (Kolb’s ‘abstract conceptualisation’ and Honey and Mumford’s ‘theorist’)
4. Testing of the implications for future action (Kolb’s ‘active experimentation’ and Honey and Mumford’s ‘pragmatist’), which then lead to new concrete experiences.
The research conducted for this plan have highlighted areas of focus and improvement. Identifying I can feel emotions intensely, understanding and developing my emotional intelligence is imperative. When reflecting and learning from experiences, I will analyse my emotions and how they were handled. A strong emotional intelligence translates into effective teamwork and management. Taking control and leading comes naturally to me, therefore I need to make sure in an equal team I don’t become overbearing. As well as not taking too much of the workload on.
Although times have been challenging and transformative amid COVID19, I am excited for the future and to progress as a business creative. I will continue to adapt to the uncertain times and use my time efficiently.
